PARENT/STUDENT EVENINGS

parent sessionsThe success of this concept has been phenomenal. High school parents and students attend a 1.5 hour study skills evening where they learn new information and participate in guided discussions together.

By giving the same message to the students and the parents and having them resolve some of the issues that arise around studying, implementation of study skills is so much more successful. Parents really appreciate the opportunity to experience this session with their students.

Although the types of evenings are tailored to the school's requirements, the main evenings run are:

'Tools for Success' for Year 7
This evening focuses on managing assignments and learning to make study notes.

'Working Together for Success' for Years 7-10
This evening covers a wider range of study skills including study techniques and more time management issues.

'Maximising Your Results' for Years 10-12
This evening is for seniors and is often held in Term 4 for Year 10 and 11 or Term 1 for Year 11 and 12 to attend and looks at what is needed for success in senior studies.

Parent Only Presentations

If you are interested in a session for parents only, ELES and Human Connectionsare now available for a 2 hour joint presentation for parents (usually targeted at Years 10-12). The cost is the same as the 1.5 hour Parent/Student Evenings - $990 including GST. ELES presents for an hour on the study skills needed for success in senior studies and Human Connections then presents strategies for helping students develop and maintain the motivation needed as well as techniques for dealing with stress in the senior years.

Note: ELES is based in Sydney. Schools outside of the Sydney area will need to arrange sessions at a time that is convenient to the school and ELES. Additional travel costs will apply.

"Tools for High School Success"

The first year of high school. Exciting, challenging and at times overwhelming. It takes students a while to adapt from primary school to the differences of high school. This evening is generally held once students have begun to settle into high school and are starting to look for ways to manage their time and homework more effectively. This 1.5 hour session gives parents and students hands on experience with time management techniques such as chunking down pieces of work, prioritising and scheduling – to avoid those stressful last minute late night rushes! We also examine an important skill that helps students achieve success in high school – making effective study notes. Why do we need to do study notes? When should you be doing them? How do you summarise? What techniques are most effective? This session does not cover the breadth of topics covered in the ‘Working Together For Success’ Evening but instead focuses on two areas in greater depth:

1. Managing homework and assignments effectively by efficient time management.
2. Learning to summarise and create study notes that really work!

Parents can expect to gain a greater understanding of tools students can use to help them achieve academic success and students can learn how to make the most of their time through simple but effective techniques. As the session is very interactive and there are activities and discussions that are completed jointly, parents and students must attend together (and bring a pen each and a highlighter!).

This session is suitable for Year 7 students. ELES works only with secondary students - not Primary students - as this is our area of expertise.

"Working Together for Success"

The increasing pressure on today’s student for academic achievement highlights the need to develop effective study practices. These changes in education have made it difficult for parents to relate their experiences as a learner to those of modern students. As a result, many parents feel that there is more they could contribute to their student ’s academic success if they better understood how to help.

This evening session allows the school to offer parents the chance to learn more about how students should study and to discuss related issues with their student. Topics covered vary depending on the year group levels attending the evening. Some of the areas covered are:

1. Managing homework and assignments effectively.
2. Getting organised (and staying there!).
3. How to study and prepare for examinations.
4. Overcoming obstacles and managing stress.

This 1.5 hour evening session is conducted by ELES at your school for parents and students to attend together. The seminar brings a highly interactive and informative approach to study skills. Parents gain a greater understanding of what students are required to do at home and students can learn how to maximise their study through simple but effective techniques. Parents and students must attend together as there are a number of interactive and discussion based activities– no parents without students, no students without parents! And bring pens! (Note: there is also a 1 hour version of this evening available.)

"Maximising Your Results"

This evening is really targeting senior students. It covers all the areas mentioned above in the 'Working Together for Success Evening' but also examines the steps students need to take to achieve the best results they are capable of in the final years of school. Some of the areas covered are:

1. Making study as effective & efficient as possible.
2. Organisation & time management skills.
3. Developing the habits of high achievers.
4. Dealing with the obstacles and problems.

In some ways this evening is like visiting a 'study skills doctor' where parents and students work together to establish which of the habits of high achievers their student already has and what they need to change for the last two years of school.
